5 Natural Detox Cleanses

I've always thought there is something special about spring and its refreshing renewal. The trees start puckering with soft green buds, neighborhood streets are alive with activity, and that smell of fresh air wafting in through my windows just can't be beat.

Spring can also be an important time to renew your body. Between harsh weather and sickness, it's easy to feel like you've been wrung out for the past several months. Prep it for the new season by flushing out the sludge that's taken up residence this past winter. Focusing on choosing foods with natural detox properties is a safe way to flush out harmful toxins and build-up to keep things squeaky clean. Read about five simple changes that can lead to big improvements.

1. Prioritize whole foods

Mamma always said to eat your greensand, as always, she was right! Eating whole foods are a great natural detox that fills you with vital minerals and vitamins that are best served in their natural form. Whole foods nix any possibility of harmful additives or preservatives that can gunk up your insides and cause you to live sub-optimally. Focus on lean meats, fruits, veggies and whole grains to keep your body happy and healthy

2. Drink water infused with cucumber, mint and lemon

Jazz up your plain Jane water with an extra punch of delicious flavor. Bonus: These ingredients come with their own detoxifying benefits. Cucumbers have properties that help cut down on inflammation. Lemon juice helps with digestion and cuts down on acidity in the body, which can be linked to pain and excess weight among other ailments. Mint acts as a one-two punch with lemon because it also aids digestion by helping to settle the stomach. Simply fill a pitcher with water, slice up two lemons, half a cucumber and add a handful of mint leaves, then let it steep over night.

3. Take chlorella daily

Adding a daily dose of chlorella through tablets or powder can lead to significant changes in your overall health. This natural detox supplement is nature's perfect superfood, and Sun Chlorella's benefits are seemingly endless: It improves mental clarity, supports healthy eyesight and keeps the immune systems healthy, among other good things. Sun Chlorella gives your body a healthy push - but it also takes away muck that can weigh you down. The secret ingredient is the chlorophyll that rids the body of persistent toxins. Taking chlorella as part of a healthy diet is an easy way to keep these out.

4. Opt for green tea rather than coffee

Coffee can be an easy crux to reach for in the morning; the smell alone is intoxicating! But if you replace that cup of robust dark roast with a mug of steaming green tea, you'll get health benefits along with that needed caffeine kick. Drinking green tea gives you a boost of antioxidants for a natural detox that tastes divine. These can mitigate free radicals in the body to protect you best at a molecular level.

5. Cut out added sugar

Turns out the sweet stuff isn't so sweet after all. Too much sugar can have a perilous effect on overall health, and there are virtually no benefits to eating it. With no vitamins or minerals attached to any sugary concoctions, you are consuming empty calories that won't fill you up and will only leave you wanting more. When you feel your sugar monster rising, reach for a juicy piece of fruit instead. This ensures you aren't filling your body with harmful pollutants and instead giving it the natural goodness it truly cravesand deserves.

Spring is the perfect time to shed winter's lingering presence. Give your body a push in the right direction to prep it for sunnier and healthier days ahead.
