Detoxifying Chlorella Face Mask Recipe
By: Brandi Black, RHN
When chlorella is taken as a nutritional supplement, it offers the body many internal beauty benefits by promoting cellular repair and rejuvenation. But have you considered using the powerful superfood as part of a homemade chlorella face mask to brighten and detoxify your skin?
The quality of ingredients you put on your skin is equally as important as the foods you eat. Since the skin is your biggest organ, anything you put on your face is absorbed by your body. This means that toxins found in commercial cosmetics, face washes and lotions (such as parabens, phthalates,
Why is Chlorella Good for Your Skin?
Mother Nature was feeling generous when she blessed us with chlorella: the amazing green superfood.
One of the reasons chlorella is so beneficial for the skin is because it contains a nutrient called Chlorella Growth Factor, or
Simply put, the healthier your skin cells are, the brighter and younger looking your skin will appear. In addition to Chlorella Growth Factor, chlorella contains several other beautifying nutrients for the skin, such as:
Beta Glucans for an Improved Complexion
Beta glucan is a sugar molecule found in
Beta glucan is considered an antioxidant because it stimulates macrophage activity in the body, to protect against harmful pathogens that can destroy cells . The research on beta glucans for the skin is on-going, but it's already a common ingredient found in many
Chlorella Growth Factor can help you absorb beta glucans through your skin when applied topically, or when taken as a nutritional supplement. Studies have also shown that chlorella can accelerate wound healing, which may be linked to the beta glucans it contains .
Nucleic Acids for Younger Looking Skin
RNA and DNA are two nucleic acids that are found in Chlorella Growth Factor. The importance of nucleic acids for the skin cannot be stressed enough. The body produces nucleic acids on its own, but their production decreases with age. Nucleic acids are the blueprints, or materials, your body needs to repair and regenerate your cells. They contain the instructions that tells your body what to do, and how to do it. Without RNA and DNA, cellular repair and renewal cannot happen as efficiently, which may be one of the reasons fine lines and wrinkles start to appear as we age. By including nucleic acids in your skincare regime from naturally formulated skin care products or nutritional supplements such as chlorella, you'll be promoting younger, healthier looking skin.
Essential Fatty Acids for Healthy Skin Cells
Essential fatty acids are the building blocks of healthy skin cell membranes. When you're receiving enough essential fatty acids through your diet (which refers to omega 3's, omega 6's and omega 9's), your skin is better equipped to produce healthy cells, which can result in a luminous glow. This is why dull, dry and flaky skin is often a result of essential fatty acid deficiency.
Forget about what you heard about fats being bad for you- they're nutrients that your skin depends on for cellular health. Omega 3 essential fatty acids, such as alpha linoleic acid, can be found in chlorella. Omega 3's help support the health of skin cells, which can brighten the appearance of your complexion naturally .
Amino Acids for Collagen Production
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, which assist the body with producing collagen. Collagen is a type of protein that provides structure to the skin. It's used in many cosmetic procedures to help speed up wound healing,
Antioxidant Vitamins and Minerals for Detoxification
Antioxidant vitamins and minerals are important nutrients for your entire body, including your skin. Since we're exposed to toxins on a regular basis (from pollution in the air, chemicals in household products, food or body care products and the water we drink), our body is constantly trying to detoxify from these toxins, or "disarm” them from being harmful to the body.
When our toxic load becomes high, it can damage the skin by promoting breakouts and accelerate the aging process. By offering the body vitamins and minerals that act as antioxidants (such as vitamins A, C, E and selenium), you can prevent the permanent damage that can be caused by toxins. Chlorella contains
With all the beauty benefits chlorella has to offer, it only makes sense to include it as part of your
3g Sun Chlorella
1-2 tsp water, or until desired consistency is reached
1. Place chlorella in a small bowl. If using Sun Chlorella tablets, crush tablets with the back of a metal spoon.
2. Add water, starting with 1 tsp and combine to form a thick mixture.
3. Add a few extra splashes of water until a clay-like texture forms. The face mask shouldn't be too thin, or too thick to apply to the face.
4. Once the desired consistency is reached, apply to a clean, exfoliated face immediately. If left for more than ten minutes, the chlorella mixture will begin to dry out.Leave on your skin for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off, and follow with your favorite toner and natural moisturizer.
I personally recommend enhancing the benefits of this face mask by following with an all natural moisturizer that contains additional antioxidants and Chlorell
