Now, when it comes to eliminating toxins from your body - and preventing or healing the symptoms above - the first place to begin is to improve your digestion.

How to Improve Your Digestion for Body Detoxification

When your digestion is sluggish, your primary organs of detoxification, such as your liver and colon, aren't able to eliminate toxins as efficiently. This is when backed up waste starts accumulating in your digestive tract. You can think of this waste as “toxic sludge.” These lingering toxins are what can contribute to the symptoms listed above.

While antioxidant vitamins promote cellular detoxification, the most important nutrient to include in your diet for digestive health is fiber. In fact, you can think of fiber as a “housekeeper” for your GI tract.

There are two types of fiber: insoluble fiber and soluble fiber. Both varieties are essential for healthy digestion, however, insoluble fiber is particularly powerful when it comes to detoxification. This is because it helps move food through your digestive tract quickly and bulks up your stool, which is how toxins are eliminated from your bowels.Insoluble fiber is found most abundantly in leafy greens, raw fruits and veggies, which is why drinking a plant based green smoothie with these ingredients everyday can significantly improve your digestion and support your body's natural detoxification processes.

As a side note: fibrous foods can be difficult for your body to digest and breakdown - especially if you don't eat raw fruits, greens and vegetables on a regular basis.

When your body isn't used to digesting fibrous foods, symptoms such as gas, bloating, cramping and stomach aches can result. For this reason, it can help to blend fibrous plant foods into a smoothie to “pre digest” them. This allows you to absorb nutrients more efficiently, and prevents digestive symptoms.

When is the Best Time to Drink a Green Smoothie For Detox?

The best time of day to drink a green smoothie is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This is because raw fruits and vegetables like to digest quickly, so when they're not mixed with other foods, such as proteins, their nutrients are absorbed more efficiently.

Since raw foods are loaded with digestive enzymes, drinking a green smoothie first thing in the morning can also help improve your digestion throughout the day.

7 Cleansing Green Smoothie Recipes for Detox

Here are 7 cleansing green smoothie recipes for body detoxification. Not only do these green smoothies taste amazing, but the antioxidant vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients they contain will support your health on many levels and leave you with a greater sense of well being for the New Year.

The amazing green superfood, chlorella, is also included in many of these smoothie recipes.

Chlorella is a rich source of the blood-cleansing nutrient called chlorophyll, and also contains a nutrient called chlorella growth factor, or CGF.
CGF is a powerful nutrient for cellular health because it contains the nucleic acids RNA and DNA, which give our cells “instructions” on functions to carry out - including detoxification.

Note: For the recipes that call for chlorella, feel free to use Sun Chlorella tablets, granules or powder. Simply add (6) 500mg or (15) 200mg chlorella tablets to your green smoothie recipe in place of the powder or granules, and blend with water and greens before adding the rest of your ingredients.

Time Saving Smoothie Tips

I hear you; finding the time to drink a green smoothie in the morning may be difficult, never mind having the time to wash and prep a bunch of vegetables.

To prepare in advance for the mornings when you're rushed, I recommend designating half an hour on your meal prep day to prepackaging your smoothie ingredients in Ziplock bags or glass mason jars. You can store your smoothie packs in the fridge or freezer, and simply add these ingredients, along with filtered water (or your liquid of choice) into your blender and blend when you're ready! Alternatively, you can also place your smoothie ingredients (minus liquids) in your blender and place your blender in the refrigerator before bed and just add water and blend in the morning.

As you can see, detoxification is as simple as increasing the plant-based foods in your diet, and making a habit of eating them on a daily basis! Since fruits, vegetables, leafy greens and algae such as chlorella, all contain the nutrients needed for detoxification, it's impossible not to feel a difference in your health when you add them to your recipes each day.
