Environmental stressors are a glaring negative of modern life.

Luckily, your body is able to cleanse itself thanks to your elimination organs— your liver, bowel, kidneys, skin, and lungs. Even at the cellular level, our bodies are hard at work filtering out impurities.

But there are steps we can take to support our natural purification process through dietary changes, supplements, and simple, time-tested cleansing methods, we can support our body’s natural waste removal process.

There are a variety of cleansing routines on the market to facilitate this process, but the underlying action is essentially the same: get the good stuff (nutrition) in and get the bad stuff out. Good nutrition ensures that our elimination organs function as well as they can. Naturally purifying herbs and foods can assist our body in this process.

One particularly helpful cleansing supplement is chlorella— a single-celled algae that can support your body’s natural detoxification system. This dark green algae is often called a “superfood” because it has unique benefits...

Since the 1970s, scientists have documented a variety of health benefits related to the unique nutrients and gentle purification action of regular chlorella consumption. It supports our energy levels and overall good health.

But if you’re just getting started on this journey to internal cleansing, you might feel a little worse before you feel better as stimulating the waste removal process may initially cause some discomfort.  As always, consult your healthcare provider before starting any new dietary supplements.

Your purification process shouldn’t be severe (but they may be if you’re being too aggressive with your cleanse), and they shouldn’t last long— just a few days at the most. But, if you’re able to endure a little discomfort.

Here are six signs that your purification routine is on the right track, even if it might not feel like it at the moment.

Occasional Cramping and Diarrhea

Chlorophyll, a green pigment present in all green veggies may initially cause cramping or diarrhea if the body isn’t accustomed to greens. Chlorella is one of nature’s greenest superfoods. When beginning to purify your body with chlorella, it is important to start off slow and gradually work your way up to the daily serving.

Gas and Bloating

Fiber is essential for waste removal. One function of fiber is that it feeds beneficial gut bacteria, which can change the composition of your microbiome. If you also cut back on sugar, simple carbs, and processed foods during your cleanse, you can minimize the population of problematic bacteria overgrowth at the same time.

Establishing a healthy balance of gut bacteria is an important step on the road to health, but gas and bloating may result in the interim. As old bacteria die off and new strains take root, there can be some gurgling and churning as your gut finds a new balance. Taking a probiotic during this awkward phase can help make the transition a little smoother.

Irritability

Another reason to take it easy during a cleanse is that it can make you irritable. You want to avoid confrontational situations even at the best of times, but it’s especially wise to steer clear during a cleanse. During the purification process, your body is in transition, and it can be uncomfortable, so you may be quick to anger and emotional reactions. Take heart in knowing that you’ll be back to yourself in a short time. As long as your elimination keeps working well, your moodiness will eventually pass too.

Fatigue

One of the major reasons people seek a cleanse is that it can give you more energy. Your system works best when there isn’t extra junk gumming up the works. However, you can feel extremely sluggish as this junk works its way out.

Again, this is a time to go easy on yourself. Purifying your body is a chance to listen closer to your body and hear what it needs to feel better. As you turn up the volume on your elimination organs, it can literally take a lot out of you. So, aim to be supportive, not punishing.

For this reason, it’s best to conduct a cleanse when you have time to slow down, not during a busy or high stress period in your life. Scheduling time for rest and self-care can make the process more effective and more enjoyable.

A Good Supplement Choice

Chlorella can help with the whole purification process— from supporting the elimination organs with unique nutrition, to supporting cell’s health, and supporting your natural cleansing process — but keep in mind that the quality of the supplement can make a huge difference in the results you get.

One major obstacle with chlorella is that its wealth of nutrients are locked away. In the wild, this algae has a very tough cell wall that our digestive system can’t penetrate on its own. It has to go through a process to make it digestible.

Some manufacturers have used heat or chemicals to bust through this barrier. But heat can hurt the algae’s nutritional content, and chemicals add an undesirable factor.

An important innovation in chlorella supplements came in 1981 when Sun Chlorella Corp. of Japan utilized an exclusive process to pulverize the thick outer wall of the chlorella cell without heat or chemicals, allowing the body to utilize all of chlorella’s nutritional benefits.

The result is a chlorella supplement with maximum nutrition content that our body can absorb easier than much of the chlorella on the market
